WHAT IS SITE PREP, GRADING & EXCAVATION?
The First Step to Every Successful Project
Site preparation, grading, and excavation is the process of evaluating, clearing, shaping, and stabilizing land before any construction begins. It's not just digging a hole — it's engineering the ground so that everything built on top of it performs as intended. Done right, it prevents costly structural problems, drainage failures, and construction delays down the road.
At Kentucky Legacy Construction, we've been doing this work across Central Kentucky for 15+ years. We understand the local soil conditions, terrain challenges, and what it takes to get a site truly ready — not just surface-level prepared.

OUR PROCESS
How We Approach Every Site Prep & Excavation Project
Based out of Lancaster, Kentucky, we work throughout the Central Kentucky region — including Lancaster, Danville, Richmond, Lexington, Harrodsburg, Nicholasville, Winchester, Stanford, and surrounding communities.
1. Property Assessment
We start by walking your property and evaluating the terrain, soil conditions, existing vegetation, drainage patterns, and project requirements. This tells us exactly what the job needs before a single machine fires up.
2. Project Planning
We map out the excavation and grading plan — where material moves, what gets removed, how drainage is managed, and what the finished grade should look like. Planning upfront saves time and money during execution.
3. Clearing & Excavation
We clear the site of any vegetation, stumps, and debris, then begin excavation. Our equipment operators are experienced and precise — we move material efficiently without disturbing areas that should stay untouched.
4. Grading & Compaction
Once excavation is complete, we establish the proper grades — rough first, then finish — and compact all fill material to ensure long-term stability. We don't cut corners on compaction; it's what separates a solid site from one that settles and shifts later.
5. Final Inspection & Handoff
We walk the finished site with you to confirm everything is graded to spec, drainage is properly established, and the site is ready for the next phase of your project.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common Questions About Site Prep & Excavation
How long does site prep and excavation take?
Timeline varies based on the size and complexity of the site. A standard residential lot can take 1–3 days. Larger commercial or agricultural projects may take a week or more. We'll give you a realistic timeline during your estimate.
Do I need a permit for excavation in Kentucky?
In many cases, yes — particularly for larger projects or those near wetlands, waterways, or utility lines. We're familiar with local permitting requirements across Central Kentucky and can help guide you through what's needed before work begins.
What's the difference between rough grading and finish grading?
Rough grading establishes the general shape and elevation of your site — the big picture. Finish grading is the final pass that fine-tunes the surface slope, removes high and low spots, and prepares the site for construction, seeding, or paving.
Can you haul away excavated material?
Yes. We can haul off excess material if it's not needed on-site, or stockpile it for use elsewhere on your property. We'll discuss the best approach during the planning phase.
Do you work on both residential and commercial projects?
Absolutely. We work with homeowners, developers, farmers, and commercial contractors throughout Central Kentucky. No project is too small or too large — we scale our crew and equipment to fit the job.
