A driveway that holds water is a driveway whose base is being slowly being damaged or washed away from underneath. One important fact about water is that runoff has somewhere it wants to go—and your driveway can be an obstacle to water. This play between material and water leads to ruts along the edges, gravel migrating downhill, or a washed-out low spot after every hard rain all point to the same thing: the grade and the drainage were never right, or they've shifted.
The strongest fix is recutting the crown or altering the structure so water sheds to the sides, and often that can mean fixing or adding a driveway culvert where the drive crosses a ditch line or a natural drainage path.
You See Signs of Sub-Base Failure
When the subbase underneath your driveway begins to break down, you'll start to notice soft spots, tire tracks, or potholes that plague your driveway. On gravel drives it shows up as stone disappearing into the subsurface so much thay you have to keep adding more. Once the base is gone, topping it off is throwing material at a problem underneath it. The only way to properly fix this kind of crumbling foundation is a full driveway excavation and installation.

What Goes into a Proper Driveway Installation

- Site Evaluation — Assessing the terrain, including slope and soil stability, and where water already runs across the property
- Excavation and Clearing — removing topsoil and unstable material down to ground that will hold
- Sub-Base Compacting — building and compacting the base in lifts so it doesn't sink or pothole later
- Culvert and drainage installation — placing appropriate driveway culvert and other drainage methods to ensure water is shed properly
- Surfacing and Crowning — spreading and shaping the final layer with enough crown that water runs off instead of standing
On longer runs back to a barn or a building site, culvert placement matters as much as the surface. A drive that drains right holds stronger for years.
Where a drive has to cut into a slope, it may also need a retaining wall to hold the bank and keep water off the driving surface.
